That night I called Morgan. It was time to make a clean break.

“It’s because I talked to Clover today, isn’t it?”

“Partially.” I sat in the backyard, alone under the stars.

“Are you angry with me?”

“No. It’s my fault for not being more upfront with you.”

She sighed. “Even now, you’re being the good guy. You can’t help it.”

“I’m sorry if I hurt you.”

“I’ll survive, but it’s you I’m worried about. Clover’s a stranger. She’s living with your grandmother, and you know nothing about her. She’s using you.”

My mouth snapped shut. I’d no intention of discussing Clover’s refusal to share her past.

Morgan huffed in my ear. “You don’t have to talk to me, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

I unclenched my muscles and stretched out on the lawn chair, listening to the peepers. “I’ll be fine.”

“I hope you are. So I guess this is good-bye.”

I gripped the phone. “It’s for the best.”

The line went silent for a moment. “I wish things had turned out differently, Daniel. I really missed you these last few months.”

“Morgan—”

“It’s fine. I don’t need you to say anything. I just wanted you to know.”

She disconnected, leaving me staring at my phone and feeling like a jerk. Today, with Clover, it felt like I’d made the right decision, but now I wondered if Morgan’s warning might come back to haunt me.
